1,100 Electric Taxis Hit Punjab Roads in New Scheme Interest-Free Plan to Boost Eco-Friendly Transport

The Punjab government has taken a major step toward eco-friendly transportation with the launch of its inaugural e-taxi scheme. Designed to promote sustainable mobility and generate employment, the initiative introduces 1,100 electric taxis in its first phase. Out of these, 1,000 vehicles will be provided to the corporate sector, while 100 will be allocated to individual applicants, including 30 exclusively reserved for women. The scheme not only aims to cut carbon emissions but also creates opportunities for citizens to participate in the growing electric vehicle ecosystem. Applicants can submit their requests online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk, ensuring accessibility and transparency. To make ownership easier, the vehicles will be offered under a five-year, interest-free instalment plan, with the provincial government covering all financial charges. This approach highlights Punjab’s commitment to modernizing its transport system while making clean energy mobility affordable and inclusive for individuals and organizations alike.
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan emphasized that the e-taxi scheme is part of Punjab’s broader vision to build a modern, eco-friendly public transport system. The initiative follows the successful launch of electric buses, with 15 already operational on multiple routes. Charging units are being installed at bus terminals, ensuring convenience and reliability for users. Looking ahead, the government plans to expand this project with the deployment of 1,500 electric buses across the province, further strengthening sustainable infrastructure. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has shown strong commitment to these green initiatives, reflecting the government’s strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and curb air pollution. By integrating private participation, the scheme also creates new business avenues and employment opportunities. The introduction of e-taxis marks not only a shift in Punjab’s transport landscape but also a significant milestone in embracing global trends toward clean, cost-effective, and technologically advanced transportation systems.
