36 UK Children Sick with Toxin Poisoning Linked to Formula Recall
The UK Health Security Agency reports 36 children have fallen ill with toxin poisoning. This is linked to the recall of certain baby formulas. Symptoms are consistent with poisoning from the cereulide toxin.
All children had consumed formula from recently recalled batches. The reports include 24 cases in England.
Details of the Recalled Products and Official Advice
The Food Standards Agency initially recalled several Nestlé infant formula batches on January 5th. The cause is the possible presence of cereulide. Danone later recalled one batch of its Aptamil first infant formula for the same toxin.
The problem ingredient has been identified as arachidonic acid oil. Health officials urge all parents and caregivers to recheck their formula. They must remove any recalled products immediately.
“If your baby has consumed the recalled formula, monitor them closely. Contact your GP or NHS 111 if you have any concerns,” officials advise. The main symptoms are vomiting, stomach cramping, and diarrhoea. They usually appear within 15 minutes to 6 hours after ingestion. Symptoms typically resolve within 24 hours if there is no further exposure. Young children and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
