The Genius Who Solved the Poincaré Conjecture and Refused $1 Million

On November 11, 2002, Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman quietly posted a paper online. It would soon shake the entire world of mathematics. In it, he solved the Poincaré conjecture, one of the most difficult problems in modern math. This complex theory had puzzled mathematicians for nearly a century. However, Perelman’s proof finally cracked the mystery. His discovery instantly made him one of the most brilliant minds of his generation.

What Is the Poincaré Conjecture?

The Poincaré conjecture deals with the shapes and surfaces of three-dimensional spaces. It helps explain how these spaces can be stretched or reshaped without tearing or creating holes. For example, a sphere can shrink or expand but remains the same shape. A donut, however, cannot become a sphere because it has a hole in the center. This idea may sound simple, but proving it mathematically was a massive challenge.

Fame, Fortune — and Refusal

After his proof was confirmed, Perelman was offered the $1 million Clay Millennium Prize. Shockingly, he turned it down. He said he was not interested in fame or money, only in truth and understanding. Therefore, his decision made headlines worldwide. In addition, it sparked debate about success, humility, and what drives true genius. Perelman chose solitude over the spotlight and in doing so, became a legend.
