MI5 Warns Parliament of Rising UK China Espionage Threat

MI5 has warned MPs and members of the House of Lords about a growing UK China espionage threat. The security service shared a fresh “espionage alert” with senior parliamentary leaders. As a result, concerns about foreign influence in Westminster have increased.

Why MI5 Raised the Alarm

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle and his House of Lords counterpart, Lord McFall, passed the alert to all members. MI5 explained that Chinese state actors continue to target people across Parliament. They focus on influencing activity and gathering sensitive information.
Sir Lindsay wrote that these actors act with “relentless” energy. In addition, he said they try to interfere with democratic processes. The message aimed to help MPs understand how deeply these operations reach into public life.
The alert highlighted that the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) uses several methods to approach potential targets. For example, MSS-linked groups use professional networking platforms to build trust. They also work through recruitment agents and consultants who act on their behalf.

How the Threat Reaches Parliament

MI5 believes the MSS wants to make long-term connections with people in political roles. These relationships may appear friendly at first. However, they could lead to harmful information-sharing over time.
The guidance encouraged MPs and peers to remain cautious. Therefore, members should verify unfamiliar contacts and treat unexpected communication carefully. MI5 stressed that awareness helps protect both individuals and national interests.
In addition, parliamentary offices received advice on digital safety. MI5 urged staff to secure online accounts and limit the amount of personal information shared publicly. The agency noted that stronger habits reduce the risk of exploitation.
The alert reminded Parliament that foreign influence efforts often move slowly. As a result, people may not notice early warning signs. Staying informed and alert remains essential for everyone working within the UK’s political system.
