Hits UK as Cold Alerts Rise Nationwide

Snow fell from London to Shetland on Wednesday as winter tightened its grip. UK snowfall cold alerts quickly followed the icy conditions. Weather stations in Lake Vyrnwy and Altnaharra recorded 7cm of snow.

Travel Disruptions and School Closures

Heavy snow caused major disruption in several regions. Dozens of schools closed across Scotland due to unsafe conditions. In addition, road travel faced delays in Derbyshire and Gwynedd. Drivers reported slow journeys as snow continued throughout the day.
Yellow weather warnings remained in place across the UK. These warnings covered large areas and urged people to travel only when necessary. Therefore, many communities prepared for further disruption as the cold weather persisted.

Health Alerts for Vulnerable Groups

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued yellow and amber cold-health alerts until Saturday. Officials warned of “significant” risks to older adults and people with health conditions. As a result, health services encouraged communities to check on vulnerable neighbours.
The agency also advised people to heat indoor areas to safe levels. In addition, it urged everyone to wear warm layers and stay updated on weather guidance. These steps may reduce the impact of the intense cold.
Forecasters expect the cold snap to continue into the weekend. However, conditions may ease early next week if temperatures rise. For now, authorities continue to monitor the weather closely and offer support where needed.
