India Afghanistan Air Cargo Services Set for Launch to Boost Trade
India and Afghanistan plan to launch new air cargo services soon. This move aims to support India Afghanistan trade and rebuild economic ties. It also gives Afghan businesses alternative access to essential goods.
The announcement came during a visit by Taliban Trade Minister Nooruddin Azizi. He urged India to expand trade routes and open cargo hubs. As a result, Kabul hopes to secure grains, medicines, and industrial supplies after border closures with Pakistan.
Indian officials confirmed progress during an India Afghanistan business conference. They said freight corridors connecting Kabul, Delhi, and Amritsar are active again. However, flights will begin once Afghanistan completes remaining paperwork.
Regional Shifts
India’s airlines still avoid Afghan routes because Pakistan has closed its airspace to them. However, Afghan carriers continue to operate regular flights between Kabul and Delhi. This helps maintain limited connectivity despite regional tensions.
India and Afghanistan have traditionally enjoyed friendly relations. Yet India does not recognise the Taliban government, which took control in 2021 after the exit of NATO forces. Even so, both sides now appear ready to adjust their approach.
Recent diplomatic exchanges reflect this shift. Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi visited New Delhi last month. It was the first high level Taliban visit since 2021. In addition, India reopened its embassy in Kabul, which marked another step toward rebuilding communication.
Experts believe this renewed engagement stems from changing regional dynamics. They note that India’s ties with Pakistan have grown more strained. As a result, New Delhi sees value in restoring links with Kabul. There are also concerns about China’s growing presence in Afghanistan.
Both countries now hope the new cargo services will increase trade and strengthen economic cooperation. The move may also create more stable supply routes for Afghan consumers and business owners.
This upcoming launch signals a practical step forward. It shows that both governments want to develop a more reliable commercial relationship. Therefore, the revival of air cargo corridors could become an important chapter in the region’s evolving trade landscape.
