Early Flu Protection Urged as Guernsey Faces Higher Seasonal Risk
People in Guernsey are being encouraged to seek early flu protection this season. Health officials say the risk of flu is rising again. They also warn that the virus may arrive sooner than usual this year. As a result, they want residents to act early and stay protected.
Rising concerns this season
Dr Nicola Brink, director of Public Health, said Australia recently faced its worst flu season on record. She shared that the country confirmed more than 410,000 cases by October. In addition, she noted that the UK and the Bailiwick expect higher numbers this winter. She believes flu activity could increase earlier in the season. Therefore, she urges people to get vaccinated without delay.
Dr Brink explained that early vaccination offers strong defence. She said it helps before infections begin to rise. She mentioned reports of an unusual flu mutation. However, she stressed that the vaccine still lowers the risk of severe illness. Experts agree that the jab remains one of the best tools for protection. For example, vaccinated people tend to recover faster and avoid serious complications. She added that timing matters, and early action offers broader seasonal coverage.
Protecting the community
Isabel Rabey, the lead infection prevention and control nurse, also highlighted community risks. She said flu outbreaks can cause cancelled surgeries. They also place vulnerable patients at greater risk. In addition, staff sickness can stretch healthcare services. Therefore, she encourages people to stay mindful of symptoms. She advised residents who feel unwell to seek medical help from their GP or the Emergency Department.
Young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with health conditions qualify for free flu jabs. Health leaders say strong uptake helps protect everyone. They hope early flu protection will reduce pressure on services and support a safer winter for the entire community
