WhatsApp Bans Third-Party AI Chatbots in Major 2026 Update

WhatsApp has confirmed a major policy shift that will impact millions of users worldwide. The platform will enforce a WhatsApp AI chatbot ban starting January 15, 2026. As a result, popular tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot will no longer work inside the app.
This update affects both personal accounts and many WhatsApp Business users. However, WhatsApp says the move is necessary to protect user privacy and ensure safer AI use across the platform.

What Changes for Regular Users

WhatsApp now requires all AI features to come from Meta. Therefore, non-Meta AI chatbots will stop functioning completely. Many people rely on ChatGPT for quick help, so this change may feel restrictive. In addition, Copilot users will lose access without the option to move their chat history.
ChatGPT users, however, will be able to migrate their old conversations before the ban takes effect. This offers some relief for those who use AI tools for daily tasks.

What Changes for Businesses

WhatsApp is keeping support for AI-powered customer service tools. This means businesses can continue using approved AI bots as long as they follow WhatsApp’s rules.
For example, companies that rely on automated responses, order tracking, or support chats can keep using AI solutions. As a result, customer service operations will remain smooth and efficient.
In addition, WhatsApp says more Meta-approved AI tools are coming soon. These tools will offer faster replies, improved personalization, and safer data handling.
