Trump Praises Jensen Huang in Talks on Chip Export Controls

U.S President Donald Trump praised Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang after a recent meeting in Washington. He said Huang clearly understood his stance on chip export controls, which remain a major point of debate. The meeting drew fresh attention because it came at a sensitive moment for the global chip industry.
Trump described Huang as a “smart man.” He added that Huang already knew his views on what Nvidia can sell to China. Therefore, many observers expect the discussion to influence upcoming policy decisions.

Debate Over AI Rules

Nvidia currently seeks approval to sell its H200 chips to China. These chips sit one step behind its latest flagship products. However, they still power advanced AI models. As a result, the request has triggered a broader conversation about competition, security, and innovation.
Huang also met lawmakers during his visit to the U.S. capital. He warned them that different regulations across states could slow AI progress. In addition, he stressed the need for clear and consistent rules to support responsible growth.
Nvidia has opposed another proposed law as well. That bill would force the company to offer chips to U.S. buyers first before selling to any “countries of concern.” The company argued the rule would limit global competition and place U.S. tech firms at a disadvantage.

Concerns About Smuggling

Later in the day, Huang spoke at an event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Nvidia supports the organization as a corporate donor. During the discussion, he dismissed fears that large numbers of restricted chips were being smuggled abroad.
He explained that a single AI data center GPU is massive. For example, it weighs about two tons and contains over a million parts. It also uses significant power and comes with a price tag near $3 million. As a result, he joked that seeing such units smuggled in bulk would be nearly impossible.
Huang said people often claim these GPUs appear in banned markets. However, he noted that smuggling enough to fill even a small facility would be an enormous challenge. His comments aimed to shift attention toward real regulatory issues rather than exaggerated fears.
