Windows 11 File Explorer Preload Update Fails to Improve Speed

Microsoft has released a background-preloading update for Windows 11 File Explorer. The idea is simple. Parts of Explorer stay loaded in memory to make the tool open faster and feel smoother.
However, early testing shows mixed results. Windows Latest reports that the update does not improve performance. In fact, Windows 11 still feels slower than Windows 10, even with the preload feature.

Performance Tests Show No Real Gains

In direct comparisons, Windows 11’s preloaded Explorer opened more slowly than Windows 10’s normal Explorer. This slowdown appeared even on low-power devices. In addition, the update uses more RAM in the background.
This may affect systems with only 4GB or 8GB of memory. Context menus and folder navigation still feel sluggish despite the preload system. Although Microsoft enabled this feature by default in Insider builds, the company has not confirmed a wider rollout.

Possible Fixes and What Comes Next

Microsoft is expected to adjust the feature in future builds. The company may revise the preload system, roll back some changes, or explore a deeper redesign. Users facing slowdowns can disable preloading for now. They can also reduce visual effects to improve speed until Microsoft updates the feature again.

Why This Update Matters

File Explorer is a core part of Windows. People use it to open files, move folders, and manage documents. When it feels slow, the whole operating system feels slower.
The new update was meant to boost speed. Instead, it adds more RAM usage and introduces longer pauses. This is especially noticeable on older PCs, budget laptops, and devices with limited memory. Since most users open File Explorer many times a day, the lack of improvement remains a real concern.
