Newport Phone Box Issue Sparks Calls for Modern Digital Street Hubs
Local residents say a growing Newport phone box issue is harming the look of the city centre. Many people complain that old telephone boxes appear dirty and neglected. As a result, they want the city to replace them with modern digital kiosks.

Several booths now look vandalised and grubby. However, residents believe newer BT Street Hubs would improve the area. These hubs offer free Wi-Fi, UK calls and charging points, which could benefit visitors and businesses.
Campaigners Push for Digital Street Hubs
Michael Enea, a political blogger and campaigner for the Conservative Party, voiced strong concerns. He said one phone box in Newport was “covered in dirt, muck and moss.” In addition, he called its condition “absolutely appalling.”
Enea believes modern hubs would give the city centre a cleaner and more welcoming feel. Many residents agree and say the current booths create a poor first impression. Therefore, they want the council and BT to act quickly.
BT is responsible for maintaining these boxes. The company said it has already sent an engineer to clean and repair the booth. It also stated that it reviews maintenance needs regularly. However, frustrated locals say more frequent checks would prevent the boxes from reaching such poor condition.
The debate has continued on local community forums. For example, some residents shared photos showing damaged glass and graffiti. Others pointed out that many people rely on digital services rather than traditional phone boxes.
Newport residents hope the upgrades will move forward soon. A cleaner city centre, they say, will encourage more footfall and boost pride in the area. For now, the community waits to see whether BT will support long-term improvements.
