Bristol Museum Theft Raid Sparks Urgent Police Appeal
Police are investigating a major incident after a Bristol Museum theft raid involving more than 600 valuable artefacts. Officers say the stolen items hold significant cultural importance. They believe the thieves targeted the museum’s archive in the Cumberland Basin area during the early hours of 25 September.

The stolen pieces include military memorabilia and rare jewellery. In addition, several natural history items and carved ivory, bronze, and silver figurines were taken. The scale of the theft has shocked museum staff and the wider community.
Detectives say the raid appears planned. However, they continue gathering evidence to understand how the thieves gained access. As a result, the investigation remains a top priority.
Police Release CCTV Images
Investigators have released images of four men captured on CCTV near the archive. These images were taken shortly after part of the museum’s British Empire and Commonwealth collection disappeared. Officers hope the public will help identify the individuals so they can progress the case.
The museum’s leadership has reacted with deep concern. Philip Walker, head of culture and creative industries at Bristol City Council, says he feels “deeply saddened” by the thefts. He also noted that the missing items represent years of preservation work. Therefore, recovering them remains critical to protecting local and global heritage.
Walker encouraged anyone with information to come forward. He stressed that community support often plays a key role in solving cases like this. In addition, he thanked the police for their ongoing efforts.
The investigation continues as officers review more footage, gather statements, and track potential leads. The museum hopes its treasured pieces will return and that the public will help bring those responsible to justice.
