Faiz Hameed Sentence Sparks Major Development in Army Accountability Process
The Faiz Hameed sentence marks a major turning point in the country’s military accountability process. A military court awarded the former ISI chief 14 years of rigorous imprisonment. The decision followed a lengthy series of proceedings under the Pakistan Army Act.
The Field General Court Martial began its process in August 2024. It heard evidence across 15 months. Officials shared that the charges involved political activity, misuse of authority, violation of secrecy laws, and financial loss to individuals. The court reviewed each charge in detail. As a result, it reached a unanimous conclusion.
Trial Process and Rights Provided
The military stressed that the proceedings respected all legal requirements. Hameed received full access to a defence team of his choice. The court allowed him opportunities to present witnesses and challenge evidence. In addition, the FGCM followed every procedural step before reaching the verdict announced on December 11, 2025.
The Army Act grants him the right to appeal. He may file an appeal within 40 days before the forum designated by the army chief. This option remains open to him, ensuring a complete legal pathway.
Wider Context and Political Reactions
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the decision as historic. He noted that the investigation included evidence from multiple cases, including the Top City matter. Tarar claimed that Hameed supported political groups despite restrictions placed after retirement. He added that further inquiries may continue.
The ISPR earlier linked several incidents, including unrest linked to May 2023, to individuals acting with political motives. These matters, it said, are being dealt with separately.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also responded. He stated that actions taken by leaders in the past continue to shape the present. The decision, he added, reinforces the message that no individual stands above the law.
