Explore Iran and Beyond with the Carnet de Passage for Easy Land Travel

International tourists now have a smoother path for exploring Iran and neighboring countries by road. The key is the Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD), issued by Iran’s Touring and Automobile Club (TACI). This document acts as a “passport for your car.” Therefore, it simplifies cross-border travel by removing major financial and bureaucratic hurdles.

Key Benefits for Overland Tourists

The CPD system offers several significant advantages for drivers. It eliminates the need for large cash deposits at customs, which were a common barrier. Furthermore, it speeds up border clearance and removes the necessity for intermediaries. As a result, journeys become faster, cheaper, and less stressful for travelers.
The system provides international legal security under the supervision of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). In addition, it helps prevent excessive currency outflow for travelers. Consequently, tourists can explore with greater peace of mind and financial control.

Expanding Regional Connectivity

Iran is actively expanding the CPD network through agreements with neighboring nations. A memorandum of understanding is already in place with Iraq, facilitating travel between the two countries. Moreover, a similar agreement has been reached with Armenia.
Discussions are also underway to implement the system with Georgia. This expansion is crucial for boosting regional tourism and pilgrimage travel. Ultimately, it aims to create a more integrated travel corridor across the Middle East and Caucasus.

A Simple Process for Greater Freedom

Obtaining a CPD in Iran is a straightforward process. Applicants need standard documents like proof of vehicle ownership, a passport, and an international driving license. The document is available through TACI’s central office in Tehran and at key border points.
The CPD typically allows for a temporary stay of up to three months in the destination country. It represents a modern solution for adventure and cultural travel. This initiative is key to making Iran a more accessible and appealing destination for international overland explorers.
