Cardiologist: Why Good Sleep Is Powerful Medicine for Brain and Heart Health

Sleep quality significantly impacts your overall health. It plays an important role in managing your weight and improving emotional well-being.

🧠 The Power of Quality Sleep

Good sleep also helps regulate blood pressure and fight diabetes. Furthermore, sleep boosts your mental and physical performance daily. During the night, your body works hard to support healthy brain function. It actively maintains your physical well-being and aids crucial repair.
Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, a seasoned interventional cardiologist, recently discussed this topic. He spoke with Dr. Shivani Gupta, a recognized inflammation expert. Dr. Bhojraj emphasized that good sleep is powerful medicine for both the brain and heart. Dr. Gupta highlighted this point on Instagram, captioning a video, “What if the most powerful medicine for your brain and heart is…simply more sleep?” Dr. Bhojraj stated that healing actually begins in your bedroom.

❤️ Your Ideal Sleep Prescription

The cardiologist explained why seven and a half hours is the ideal sleep duration. This duration is the “sweet spot” for brain health and heart support. It is also key for efficient inflammation repair in the body. Dr. Bhojraj believes sleep is central to nearly everything we do. He offered a clear takeaway for everyone: aim for seven and a half hours nightly. Good sleep is a powerful medicine you can access easily.
He noted that this equals five 90-minute sleep cycles for most people. However, achieving this goal may not feel easy for everyone. Therefore, it remains an excellent target. “If all you do is that,” he said, “then your brain will work better, your body will work better.” Interestingly, some studies suggest that seven hours might be the optimal time. A report in The British Medical Journal found the best survival rates among those sleeping seven hours. Aiming for the 7-8 hour range is essential for everyone’s health.
