Anti-Smuggling Drive Boost: PM Orders Tough Action Nationwide
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday ordered an anti-smuggling drive boost across Pakistan. He stressed that authorities will show no leniency toward tax evasion and illegal trade. As a result, enforcement agencies must act faster and more firmly.
He issued these directives while chairing a weekly FBR performance review in Islamabad. Officials briefed him on ongoing enforcement measures. Therefore, the government plans to tighten oversight nationwide.
Crackdown on Smuggling and Tax Evasion
The prime minister praised FBR and Pakistan Customs for recent successes. He said effective action had reduced smuggling significantly. However, he warned that billions of rupees are lost each year due to illegal trade.
He noted that curbing smuggling helped bring goods into the documented economy. In addition, legal imports of several commodities increased. He directed provinces to cooperate fully against illegal petrol pumps.
Officials shared updates on reforms during the meeting. For example, authorities introduced an integrated customs system nationwide. Petrol pumps now operate under registration through the Rahguzar App.
District administrations gained new powers under the Petroleum Act. Consequently, they can seize illegal machinery. Authorities also activated GPS tracking for petroleum transport.
From July to November 2025, revenue rose by 82 percent year-on-year. As a result, actions against illegal fuel, cigarettes, tyres, garments, and electronics boosted collections.
Expanding Regional and Global Cooperation
Separately, Shehbaz Sharif stressed stronger trade ties with Australia. He met Australian High Commissioner Tim Kane in Islamabad. He highlighted agriculture, livestock, and mining as key sectors.
The prime minister welcomed Australian interest in Reko Diq. He also praised the Pakistani diaspora’s role. Moreover, he condemned the Bondi Beach attack and expressed solidarity.
Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed cultural cooperation with Tajikistan. He welcomed Tajikistan’s culture minister during ongoing cultural celebrations. Therefore, the anti-smuggling drive boost aligns with broader economic and diplomatic goals.
