Milano Neutral Entry Confirmed as IOC Rules Out National Return for Russians

Milano Neutral Entry remains the rule for Russian athletes at the Winter Games. The International Olympic Committee confirmed this stance clearly. Even a peace agreement would not change the decision.

IOC Confirms Neutral Path

IOC President Kirsty Coventry shared the update in an Italian interview. She explained the policy remains firm. Therefore, athletes may compete only as individuals. Russian competitors cannot represent their country. They will not use a flag or anthem. As a result, national identity stays separate from participation. The IOC first applied this policy after the 2022 Ukraine invasion. Belarus received the same restrictions. Since then, the committee has kept a consistent approach.

A Shift in Olympic Planning

Coventry also discussed future event planning. She highlighted multi-city hosting as a growing trend. Italy’s setup offers a strong example. According to her, shared hosting improves flexibility. It also spreads economic benefits more evenly. In addition, it reduces pressure on single cities. The upcoming Games will run from February 6 to 22. Organisers expect global attention despite restrictions. For example, fans will still watch top-level competition.
The IOC has not yet issued a formal statement. However, Coventry’s comments align with earlier decisions. Therefore, major changes seem unlikely. Supporters and athletes continue to adjust. Many value fairness and safety. Moreover, inclusive competition remains a core Olympic goal. While politics shape policies, sport still brings people together. This approach aims to balance responsibility and opportunity. As a result, the Games move forward with clarity.
