Urban Trade Closures Continue as Karachi Authorities Seal Major Markets
Karachi faced fresh urban trade closures on Monday as officials kept major markets shut for a third straight day. The action affected motorcycle sellers on Akbar Road and auto spare parts dealers near Tibet Centre. As a result, traders across the city expressed concern over business losses.
Authorities said the move aimed to ease traffic and protect public walkways. However, many shop owners questioned the timing and scale of the operation. They warned that sudden closures could hurt livelihoods and daily commerce.
Factors Behind the Enforcement Drive
Officials sealed 86 outlets near Tibet Centre after repeated warnings. According to them, vehicles parked for repairs blocked traffic flow. Therefore, enforcement teams stepped in to prevent further congestion.
In addition, the administration closed over 100 motorcycle-related outlets on Akbar Road. Officials argued that mechanics worked on public roads, creating safety risks. As a result, traffic jams worsened during peak hours.
The deputy commissioner said warnings went unheeded despite multiple notices. He added that compliance would allow reopening in stages. However, strict checks will continue across busy districts.
Traders Raise Economic Concerns
Traders criticized the urban trade closures, calling them excessive. Many argued that displaying products outside shops is common worldwide. For example, motorcycle dealers said displays help customers compare options easily.
Some business owners demanded marked lanes instead of full shutdowns. Others alleged the campaign could lead to higher fees later. Meanwhile, officials denied such claims and stressed public convenience.
The city commissioner confirmed the drive will continue. He said no business may use footpaths or service lanes. Shops must submit written assurances before reopening.
Despite criticism, officials insist the effort supports long-term order. Traders, however, hope for dialogue to balance regulation and economic activity.
