Rawalpindi and Islamabad are witnessing a sharp increase in conjunctivitis cases, with local hospitals and clinics recording a surge in patients over the past few days. Health officials have expressed concern over the rising trend, urging the public to adopt precautionary measures to curb the spread of the infection.
Conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye,” is a highly contagious eye condition that causes redness, itching, swelling, and watery discharge. Medical professionals in both cities noted that the infection is spreading rapidly, particularly in crowded areas, schools, and public offices.
Dr. Shahid, a senior ophthalmologist in Islamabad, emphasized the importance of early treatment, saying, “Conjunctivitis is not life-threatening but it can spread quickly if people ignore basic hygiene and come into close contact with others.”
Hospitals in the twin cities have reported hundreds of new cases within the past week, with many patients experiencing symptoms severe enough to disrupt daily activities. Doctors have advised those infected to avoid unnecessary travel, refrain from touching their eyes, and use prescribed eye drops.
The District Health Authorities have also launched awareness campaigns, urging people to wash their hands frequently, avoid sharing personal items like towels, and seek medical attention at the first sign of infection.
While health experts have assured that conjunctivitis is manageable with proper care, they warned that negligence could result in further outbreaks. Residents are encouraged to remain cautious, particularly during the ongoing seasonal transition that often fuels viral infections.
