ZHS Coastal Makeover: Karachi Island to Become Eco-Tourism and Sports Hub
The federal government has unveiled the ZHS Coastal Makeover to reshape a Karachi island into a modern destination. The plan focuses on eco-tourism, sports tourism, and lifestyle retreats. As a result, officials expect strong economic and social benefits.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry shared the vision during a high-level meeting. He said the project balances environmental care with long-term growth. Therefore, sustainability remains a core priority from the start.
Investment Size and Job Creation
The project carries an estimated cost of Rs1 to Rs1.5 billion. This equals roughly $3.6 to $5.3 million. In addition, the government has marked it as a key investment priority.
Construction activities will create between 1,000 and 1,500 direct and indirect jobs. Once operations begin, another 1,200 to 1,800 permanent roles will follow. As a result, local families will gain steady income opportunities.
Strategic Location Advantages
Ziarat Hasan Shah lies near Karachi’s Eastern Zone. It stretches nearly four kilometres in length, with varying width. The area also features a sandy beach suited for leisure and hospitality projects.
Unlike many offshore sites, the location allows land access. Therefore, developers can connect it directly to Karachi’s road network. This access lowers costs and speeds up development timelines.
The minister noted that easy access also supports nearby businesses. For example, small vendors and service providers can benefit quickly. This approach keeps economic gains inclusive.
Private Investment and Blue Economy Goals
Authorities plan to develop the project through a BOT or PPP model. The government will invite experienced private partners in hospitality and recreation. However, officials will protect public interest through strict oversight.
Pakistan’s coastline spans over 1,000 kilometres. Much of it remains underused. Therefore, policymakers now see maritime development as a growth engine.
The makeover aligns with broader port-led strategies. These efforts aim to strengthen trade, tourism, and investment. Ultimately, the project supports Pakistan’s expanding blue economy vision.
