Pakistan Approves Major Health Projects Under Uraan Initiative

The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved five new health projects. Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal chaired the meeting in Islamabad on Thursday. These projects are part of the Uraan Pakistan Social Sector drive.
This initiative focuses on people-first development. Its goals are to deliver affordable healthcare and cut catastrophic costs for families. Furthermore, it aims to shield vulnerable citizens from financial ruin.

Major Projects Recommended for Final Approval

The CDWP recommended two large projects for final review. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) will now consider them.
First, the revised Sehat Sahulat Program has a cost of Rs. 40,188 million. This program provides universal health insurance in Islamabad, AJK, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Therefore, it aims to reduce out-of-pocket hospitalization costs by up to 60%.
Second, the Establishment of Jinnah Hospital (Polyclinic-II) in Islamabad is worth Rs. 15,948 million. This new facility will have 400 beds. It also includes modern IT systems and a solar power setup for sustainability.

Three Health Projects Get Direct Approval

The forum also directly approved three other projects. Their total cost is Rs. 12.524 billion.
One project strengthens disease surveillance and lab networks nationwide. Another upgrades border health services in Karachi. The third project modernizes the cardiology department at Polyclinic Hospital in Islamabad.
Minister Ahsan Iqbal issued clear directives during the meeting. He emphasized that public funds must focus on the poor and vulnerable. Consequently, he ordered the Sehat Sahulat Program to revert to its original name and core mission.
He also expressed concern over rising project costs. The Minister demanded better initial planning to prevent frequent budget revisions. This step ensures more efficient use of national resources.

A Commitment to Accessible Healthcare

These projects reflect a strong government commitment. The goal is to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens.
The Uraan Pakistan vision prioritizes human development and social protection. As a result, these health initiatives form a key pillar of national progress. They help build a stronger social safety net for everyone.
