PTI Senators Move IHC as Rawalpindi Media Remarks Highlight Jail Concerns
Fourteen PTI senators filed a constitutional petition at the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday. The move followed Rawalpindi media remarks highlighting concerns about detention conditions. They sought permission to meet Imran Khan and his spouse.
Imran Khan has remained at Adiala Jail for over two years. Authorities have limited meetings with relatives and party members. Despite court orders, officials repeatedly blocked access.
Supporters protested outside the jail in response. However, police used water cannons to disperse demonstrators. As a result, tensions around the issue increased.
Senators challenge detention conditions
The senators submitted the plea under Article 199 of the Constitution. They named the federal government, Punjab authorities, and the jail superintendent as respondents. The petition challenged extended isolation practices.
The plea argued that current treatment violated prison laws and constitutional protections. In addition, it cited international human rights commitments. The senators called the situation unlawful and degrading.
They also requested binding guidelines to prevent misuse against political detainees. Therefore, they urged institutional reform and oversight. The senators stressed lawful treatment and dignity.
Political response and public message
Later, party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan spoke in Rawalpindi. His Rawalpindi media remarks focused on denied family meetings. He called access a legal and constitutional right.
He urged judicial action to restore confidence in justice. Moreover, he warned that delayed relief deepens frustration. He appealed for timely decisions.
Barrister Gohar also addressed national unity. He reaffirmed support for the state and its institutions. Meanwhile, he announced a peaceful protest plan for February 8.
He urged citizens to express dissent calmly. Ultimately, he stressed dialogue, restraint, and constitutional order.
