Barcelona Train Derailment Leaves Driver Dead, Dozens Injured Amid Storms

The Barcelona train derailment has left one train driver dead and at least 37 people injured. Five passengers remain in serious condition. The crash happened near Barcelona during intense storms hitting north-eastern Spain.
The commuter train derailed after hitting a retaining wall. The wall collapsed onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní. As a result, several carriages jumped the rails.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene within minutes. Therefore, responders evacuated all passengers safely from the train. Catalonia fire officials confirmed no one remained trapped.

Storms Raise Fresh Safety Concerns

The crash occurred during severe weather across the region. Heavy rain and strong winds battered rail lines and roads. In addition, authorities placed several coastal areas on high alert.
Inspector Claudi Gallardo from Catalonia’s fire service said crews worked quickly despite harsh conditions. He confirmed that all passengers received medical checks. Many injured people were treated at nearby hospitals.
This derailment follows another deadly rail incident in southern Spain just two days earlier. That earlier collision involved two trains and caused multiple fatalities. Therefore, concerns about rail safety have intensified nationwide.
Officials have launched an investigation into the Barcelona train derailment. Early reports suggest weather conditions may have played a role. However, engineers will also examine track stability and infrastructure maintenance.
Spain’s rail operator has pledged full cooperation with investigators. In addition, services on the affected line remain suspended. Authorities are advising travelers to check updates before commuting.
Local leaders expressed condolences to the driver’s family. They also praised emergency workers for their swift response. As a result, many passengers avoided more serious harm.
Weather warnings remain active across parts of Spain. Therefore, transport officials urge caution during ongoing storms. The Barcelona train derailment now adds pressure on authorities to strengthen rail safety during extreme weather events.
