Mustafa Kamal Demands Federal Control of Karachi, Slams 18th Amendment
Federal Health Minister and MQM-P leader Syed Mustafa Kamal on Thursday demanded federal control of Karachi, citing governance failures. He accused the PPP-led Sindh government of mismanaging the city. Therefore, he warned that the 18th Amendment has harmed Sindh and Pakistan.
Kamal addressed a press conference at MQM-P’s Bahadurabad center. He expressed grief over the Gul Plaza tragedy and missing persons. Moreover, he said MQM-P recognizes its civic responsibility toward Karachi.
Criticism of the 18th Amendment
Kamal launched strong criticism of the 18th Amendment. He said the amendment failed to deliver public relief. As a result, he called it a “festering wound” damaging national stability.
His remarks followed heated debate in the National Assembly. Lawmakers from PML-N and PPP clashed over governance issues. Federal Food Minister Rana Tanveer linked the Gul Plaza fire to administrative failures.
MQM leader Syed Hafeezuddin said the amendment remains open to debate. He also proposed new administrative units in Sindh. However, PPP’s Syed Naveed Qamar defended provincial autonomy.
Call for Federal Intervention
Kamal said weak provincial governance strengthened criminals and extremists. He accused the PPP of unchecked authority during previous governments. Therefore, he argued that Karachi requires federal intervention.
He proposed Governor’s Rule under constitutional provisions. Kamal cited Articles 148 and 149 as legal grounds. He said these articles allow intervention during governance breakdowns.
Recalling past incidents, Kamal mentioned fires at Bolton Market and high-rise buildings. He said urban populations continue to suffer neglect. Moreover, he warned of growing alienation among city residents.
Kamal rejected allegations against MQM leadership. He claimed past federal leaders engaged directly with MQM. He also alleged external interference worsened Karachi’s situation.
He concluded with a warning of instability. Kamal said continued failures would deepen disillusionment. Ultimately, he urged urgent action before more lives are lost and trust erodes further.
