Gul Plaza Secured After Fire, Not Sealed: Karachi Authorities
Authorities in Karachi have clarified that Gul Plaza secured status does not mean a complete seal. Officials said they restricted access only to protect public safety. Therefore, no permanent closure has taken place.
South District Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khosa addressed the confusion. He explained that officials cordoned off the building to prevent unauthorized entry. However, authorities continue to allow supervised visits.
Controlled Access for Families and Shopkeepers
Officials now permit affected families to enter Gul Plaza under supervision. Each visit follows strict safety arrangements. As a result, relatives can access the site without risk.
The same procedure applies to shopkeepers. Authorities escort traders to retrieve goods and inspect their shops. Therefore, officials aim to balance safety with recovery needs.
The deputy commissioner also confirmed progress in the identification process. Families of two missing individuals arrived from Peshawar. Authorities called them to Civil Hospital for DNA sampling.
The deadly fire broke out on January 17. Flames spread quickly through the multi-story complex. Gul Plaza housed nearly 1,200 family-run shops selling wedding clothes, toys, and household items.
Officials have confirmed at least 73 deaths so far. As a result, the incident ranks as Karachi’s deadliest fire in more than ten years.
Investigation and Rehabilitation Plan Announced
Police registered an FIR at Nabi Bux Police Station. The case cites negligence and carelessness. However, authorities have not reached conclusions on sabotage or terrorism.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar said investigators continue to examine all angles. Anti-terrorism charges may apply if evidence supports them.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a recovery plan. The government will demolish the remaining structure. Reconstruction will finish within two years.
Families of victims will receive Rs10 million each. Shopkeepers will get Rs500,000 as immediate relief. In addition, the government will arrange interest-free bank loans up to Rs10 million.
Officials will also provide temporary shops nearby. Rent will remain waived for one year. Overall, Gul Plaza secured measures aimed to protect lives while restoring livelihoods.
