Pakistan Bangladesh Direct Flights Resume After 14 Years
Pakistan and Bangladesh have resumed direct air travel after a 14-year gap. The development marks a positive shift in bilateral relations. As a result, travel between the two countries will become faster and more convenient. Biman Bangladesh Airlines operated its first direct flight from Dhaka to Karachi on Thursday. The flight departed Dhaka at 8pm and landed in Karachi around 11pm.
Therefore, passengers completed the journey in just over three hours. Airport authorities and Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority confirmed they completed all necessary arrangements. Officials received the flight schedule in advance. In addition, they ensured smooth handling for the inaugural service.
Restart of Direct Air Connectivity
Biman Bangladesh Airlines will operate the Karachi–Dhaka route twice a week. These are the first regular direct flights since 2012. As a result, travelers will no longer rely on lengthy connections. An airline official said the carrier plans to maintain two weekly services. She added that demand will guide future expansion. However, the airline remains optimistic about passenger response.
Previously, travelers depended on connecting flights through Gulf hubs. These included Dubai and Doha. Direct flights will now save time and reduce travel costs.
Growing Trade and People-to-People Ties
The airline said direct flights will support business, tourism, and family visits. Improved air links will also encourage people-to-people contact. Therefore, bilateral engagement is expected to deepen. Pakistan and Bangladesh share a complex history. They were once one country before separating in 1971. Despite past tensions, recent developments show improving ties. Trade links have already gained momentum. Cargo ships resumed sailing from Karachi to Chittagong in November 2024. As a result, trade volumes have increased steadily.
Cultural exchanges have also expanded. Pakistani singers have performed in Dhaka in recent months. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi patients are traveling to Pakistan for medical treatment. Overall, the return of Pakistan Bangladesh direct flights signals renewed cooperation. It reflects growing trust across aviation, trade, and cultural engagement.
