These tiny creatures are early warning systems. Their decline signals bigger environmental damage. For example, two types of sengi look identical. However, one lives only on rocky ground. The other prefers sandy habitats. Identifying them correctly is crucial. It shows which specific environment is under threat.

How the Footprint Method Works

The process is simple and ethical. Researchers use safe traps with soft bedding. Animals walk on special paper, leaving clear tracks. They are then released unharmed. Next, a computer analyzes high-resolution images. The software measures subtle differences in foot shape. These differences are invisible to the human eye.

The Stunning Results of the Test

The system was tested on two sengi species. It achieved an accuracy rate of 94% to 96%. This success offers a major advantage. It avoids slower, invasive methods like DNA sampling. Therefore, conservationists can monitor species faster and more cheaply.

This technology is flexible and promising. It can adapt to almost any ecosystem worldwide. Scientists plan to expand it to other species. The goal is to create a reliable “pulse” on planetary health. This simple footprint analysis helps protect biodiversity before it quietly unravels.
