Russia Missile Attack Hits Ukraine Energy Grid as Winter Deepens
Russia has launched a Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s energy sector using a record number of ballistic missiles, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The strikes targeted power plants and infrastructure across Kyiv and several regions. As a result, thousands of residents faced freezing conditions once again.
The attack hit during extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to minus 20 degrees Celsius. In Kyiv alone, more than 1,000 apartment blocks lost heating overnight. In addition, officials confirmed that a power plant in Kharkiv suffered damage beyond repair.
Energy infrastructure under intense pressure
Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, described the assault as the strongest strike this year. The company said missiles and drones hit facilities in Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa, and other cities. Some plants supplied heating only, which made them vital for civilian survival.
Engineers worked through the night to restore services. However, repeated strikes have weakened the system further. Each attack slows repairs and increases the risk of prolonged blackouts.
Zelensky accused Moscow of using winter as a weapon. He said Russia chose escalation over diplomacy and urged allies to apply maximum pressure. The Russia missile attack followed the expiry of an informal energy truce brokered by Donald Trump.
Air defence shortages raise alarm
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia fired more than 70 ballistic and cruise missiles, along with 450 drones. Air defences intercepted only a fraction of them. Therefore, many missiles reached their targets.
Officials warned that missile shortages continue to limit air defence capabilities. Ukraine relies heavily on US-made Patriot systems to protect its skies.
Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who visited Kyiv the same day, called on allies to release more weapons quickly. He stressed that military support remains essential during peace talks.
Despite hardship, public anger continues to grow toward Moscow. Many Ukrainians reject compromise and remain determined to endure the winter together.
