Sindh Withdraws MPO Detention Orders, Release of Citizens Begins
The Sindh government announced an MPO detention withdrawal on Tuesday. Authorities removed detention orders issued under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance. As a result, officials directed district SSPs to release detained citizens immediately.
The government also issued a formal notification for law enforcement agencies. Therefore, police officials must ensure quick compliance with the new orders.
Court Hearing Prompts Government Action
The decision came during a hearing at the Sindh High Court’s constitutional bench. Petitioners had challenged the detention of PTI workers under the MPO law. However, the court warned officials that failure to withdraw the orders could lead to strict action.
The government’s lawyer requested one week to submit a written order. Meanwhile, the petitioners’ counsel told the court that the detentions had affected at least 187 families. This statement added urgency to the matter.
Earlier, PTI had approached the court against the arrest of more than 180 party workers. The party argued that authorities carried out these detentions unlawfully. In addition, PTI claimed that the arrests created fear and distress across many households.
PTI Arrests Linked to Protest Call
The Sindh Home Department defended the arrests before PTI’s February 8 protest call. Officials said they detained individuals on suspicion of planning unrest. They also claimed the workers posed a threat to life and property.
Authorities had planned to shift detainees to Malir Jail for 30 days. However, PTI stated that police arrested workers between Saturday and Sunday night. The party also alleged that law enforcement launched a citywide crackdown targeting supporters.
The court issued notices to the Advocate General of Sindh and other respondents. As a result, officials must submit replies in the next hearing. The bench scheduled the next session for February 10.Many families now hope the MPO detention withdrawal will bring relief and prevent further unlawful detentions.
