The 11th spell of the ongoing monsoon season has begun across Punjab today and is expected to persist until September 19, bringing the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall in different districts of the province. According to Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, Irfan Ali Kathia, a high flood situation is being observed at Panjnad, where the water flow has surged to 308,000 cusecs. The River Sutlej is currently witnessing a medium-level flood, while the water levels in both the Chenab and Ravi rivers remain within normal limits. The fresh spell of rain is being closely monitored by the authorities, given the increased risk of urban flooding, waterlogging, and riverine floods that could affect agricultural areas and low-lying settlements. Officials have confirmed that the PDMA is working in coordination with local administrations to track rainfall patterns and river flows to ensure timely alerts and response.
In light of the forecast, the Punjab government has directed all departments to remain on high alert and deploy maximum resources to safeguard lives and property. DG PDMA emphasized that under the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab, emergency response units have been mobilized, while rescue teams and machinery are being stationed in vulnerable districts. The PDMA has also issued public safety guidelines, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, stay away from overflowing rivers and drains, and take extra precautions in flood-prone areas. The public has been advised to promptly report any emergency by contacting the PDMA helpline at 1129. Meanwhile, the continuous inflows in the Sutlej and Panjnad pose challenges to local populations, as relief and evacuation measures may be required if water levels rise further. The department assured that all efforts are being made to minimize risks, ensure preparedness, and maintain an effective response throughout the spell.
