BioShock Movie May Tie into New Game, Production Targets 2027
Producer Roy Lee provides an update on the long-awaited Netflix adaptation of the iconic franchise. BioShock movie game tie-in could see the film release alongside a new entry in the series. The project was first announced in 2022 but remained dormant for years. Other projects like The Long Walk and a Hunger Games prequel took precedence. However, Lee states the BioShock movie could tentatively be next up for him. Both Netflix and Take-Two are anxious to see the film move forward. They want the release to coincide with potential new incarnations of the game. Lee shared these details in an interview with Collider recently.
The Fourth BioShock Game Remains in Development
Take-Two first announced a new BioShock game back in 2019. Last year, CEO Strauss Zelnick promised the game would eventually be released. No specific details about the project have emerged since then. The film’s timing suggests a coordinated release strategy between both companies. Lee hopes production will finally begin in 2027. He stopped short of committing to a firm date for now. However, the intent is clearly to get things started next year. This timeline would allow for a release in the following years.
Video Game Adaptations Thrive on Streaming Platforms
Netflix has found significant success with video game adaptations recently. Series based on Sonic, Tomb Raider, Castlevania, and Devil May Cry all performed well. Amazon’s Fallout television series has also been a massive hit. They are currently working on a God of War series with Ryan Hurst. Netflix is also the exclusive streaming partner for the Legend of Zelda film. That project will be released in theaters first before coming to streaming. The BioShock movie joins a growing slate of gaming adaptations. Fans have waited years for this project to finally materialize.
