Karachi’s Upgraded Jinnah International Airport Runway Welcomes First International Flight
A major aviation milestone was achieved in Karachi on Thursday. The newly rebuilt runway at Jinnah International Airport handled its first international arrival. The incoming flight from Saudi Arabia marked the operational launch of the revamped central runway.
The Pakistan Airports Authority arranged a ceremonial water cannon salute upon landing. This traditional aviation honor celebrated the successful completion of months of large-scale renovation.
The redevelopment project cost over Rs8 billion. It was completed in approximately 18 months. Despite extensive construction, flight operations continued without disruption throughout the upgrade period.
World-Class Specifications
The runway can now accommodate the world’s largest aircraft. Wide-body planes and heavy cargo carriers can now operate from Karachi. This includes the massive Airbus A380 superjumbo.
PAA CEO and Airport Manager Adnan Khan confirmed the upgraded status. The facility has been upgraded to Category 4F, aligning with international aviation standards. This is the highest classification for commercial aircraft handling.
Runway 07L/25R has been reclassified following modernization. A successful calibration test flight was conducted on January 3, 2026. This confirmed the runway’s readiness for wide-body operations.
Engineering and Safety Enhancements
Project Director Hafiz Zahid Ishaq detailed the technical improvements. The runway has been reinforced with stronger materials to bear heavier loads. This ensures durability for decades of intensive use.
Upgraded taxiways improve aircraft movement efficiency. Modern lighting systems enhance landing guidance and overall safety. A Category 1 instrument landing system has been installed.
This system facilitates safe landings during challenging weather conditions. It also has flexibility for further technological upgrades in the future. The enhancements are designed for 25 to 30 years of reliable operations.
Long-Term Benefits
This upgrade positions Karachi for future aviation growth. The ability to handle A380s and heavy cargo opens new route possibilities. International airlines can now operate larger aircraft to Pakistan.
Passengers will benefit from potentially more flight options. Cargo operators gain capacity for increased trade volumes. The airport’s infrastructure now matches its status as Pakistan’s busiest international gateway.
The successful project completion demonstrates effective planning and execution. Maintaining operations throughout construction was a significant achievement. Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport is now ready for the next generation of aviation.
