Rs1bn DUHS Infectious Lab Opens in Karachi to Boost Disease Detection
The DUHS infectious lab has opened in Karachi to improve public health services. Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho inaugurated the facility at ‘Dow University of Health Sciences’. The project cost Rs1 billion, with Rs800 million funded by the Sindh government.
Officials also confirmed an annual operating cost of around Rs300 million. The lab sits at the ‘Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital and Research Centre’ near Nipa. Therefore, it strengthens the province’s ability to manage infectious diseases.
Advanced Disease Detection
The lab focuses on early and accurate diagnosis of infections. For example, it can detect dengue, influenza, HIV, and tuberculosis. As a result, doctors can begin treatment without delay.
Moreover, the facility handles high-risk pathogens in a secure setting. This ensures safety for both staff and patients. It also improves response time during outbreaks.
Strengthening Research Capacity
The DUHS infectious lab supports modern research and innovation. Experts can study emerging diseases and track their spread. In addition, the lab allows genomic sequencing during outbreaks.
This helps health teams understand infections better. Therefore, they can design targeted treatments and prevention strategies.
Improving Healthcare System
The lab reduces reliance on foreign testing facilities. As a result, patients save time and costs. Faster reports also improve decision-making in hospitals.
Furthermore, the facility offers training in biosafety and diagnostics. Healthcare workers gain practical skills through hands-on experience. Ultimately, this investment strengthens Sindh’s overall health system.
