Cartel Violence in Guadalajara: Burnt Cars and Empty Streets After “El Mencho” Killing

Cartel Violence in Guadalajara: Burnt Cars and Empty Streets After “El Mencho” Killing

Driving into Guadalajara, the evidence remains visible. Charred debris sits on roadsides everywhere. Scorched patches mark the highways after Sunday’s rampage. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) set scores of vehicles alight. They also ransacked and burned convenience stores. This violence avenged the killing of their leader, “El Mencho.”

A Message of Power

The cartel projected exactly the message they wanted. With or without their chief, they remain powerful. They can unleash havoc and chaos on the streets. Therefore, fear and intimidation now grip the city.

Government Response

President Claudia Sheinbaum tries to counter this narrative. She spoke of “peace and tranquillity” returning to the nation. She praised the security forces’ response to the violence. However, convoys of troops now circulate around Guadalajara. They are meant to bring reassurance. Yet many residents feel more uneasy with their presence.

A City in Hiding

The streets are emptier than usual today. People fear more violence will come. Most small businesses remain shuttered. Schools closed as workers stay home with families.
This Guadalajara cartel violence aftermath shows a city on edge. The CJNG proved their power. The government struggles to restore normal life.
