DFDS to Launch Discounted Multi-Trip Ferry Scheme for Islanders and Tourists

K00075-1

A new commuter scheme is being developed by Danish ferry operator DFDS to make ferry travel more affordable for both residents and visitors. The plan, which includes discounted fares and multi-use tickets, is being designed in response to requests from island communities and frequent travelers.
The initiative was first proposed by Deputy and Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel, who confirmed that DFDS is creating flexible pricing models to reduce costs for islanders and provide more attractive options for frequent commuters. Although no official launch date has been set, the scheme is expected to make ferry services more accessible for residents and domestic tourists.
Helping Islanders and Regular Commuters
The focus of the scheme is to ease the financial burden on those who rely heavily on ferries for daily travel, whether for work, education, shopping, or business. By offering multi-trip passes and discounted ticket bundles, the program will help regular users save significantly compared to buying individual tickets for every journey.
Boosting Tourism with Flexible Options
Tourists are also expected to benefit. Discounted multi-use tickets will provide flexibility for visitors exploring multiple islands during their stay, making ferry travel more appealing and cost-effective. The initiative could increase tourism revenue by encouraging longer visits and helping tourists discover lesser-known destinations.
Transparency and Development
Deputy Morel confirmed that DFDS and government officials are working closely on the scheme’s design but acknowledged that implementation may take time. In the meantime, a redacted version of the ferry concession agreement between DFDS and the government will be released publicly to ensure transparency while protecting commercially sensitive details.
A Step Toward Sustainable Growth
By making ferry travel more affordable and convenient, the scheme is set to strengthen community connectivity, reduce commuting costs, and promote eco-friendly tourism. Once launched, it could serve as a model for sustainable transport and tourism management in other island regions.
