HBO Announces Baldur’s Gate 3 TV Series from Craig Mazin

Deadline reports that The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin will create a live-action adaptation of the acclaimed RPG. Baldur’s Gate 3 HBO series will tell an original story set immediately after the video game’s events. Larian Studios lead designer Swen Vincke confirmed via social media that the studio is not involved. Instead, Mazin collaborates with Wizards of the Coast’s Head of Story Chris Perkins. The series joins a growing slate of successful video game adaptations on television. The Last of Us, Fallout, and Arcane have all proven hugely popular recently. HBO trusts Mazin based on his work with Chernobyl and The Last of Us. However, fans immediately raised concerns about the adaptation’s approach to canon.

Why Fans Worry About the Canon Approach

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers unparalleled player agency through its branching narrative structure. No two endings of the game are exactly alike for any player. The show will now have to pick a specific canon storyline to follow. This contradicts the hundreds of stories players created during their own runs.
The brilliance of Baldur’s Gate 3 lies in telling hundreds of different stories. Undoing that in the name of canon removes what makes the game special. The approach contrasts sharply with Amazon’s Fallout adaptation strategy. Fallout remains mostly standalone while avoiding clashes with game canon.

What the Series Will Cover

The show will focus on characters both old and new dealing with ramifications. They will face the consequences of events from the third game specifically. The series must draw from the game’s various story branches somehow. However, settling on specific canon overrides player experiences significantly.
Fans worry this will trivialize what they love about the original game. The sense of freedom sets Baldur’s Gate 3 apart from similar titles. No two Dungeons & Dragons campaigns are exactly alike either. The adaptation faces an uphill battle satisfying the passionate fanbase.
