Punjab Launches Wildlife Reforms and Modern Monitoring Systems
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has declared wildlife a vital national asset. She emphasized that protecting it is a shared responsibility. She issued this message on World Wildlife Day. Punjab has introduced innovative reforms to curb illegal hunting. Amendments to the Punjab Wildlife Act 1974 and the Protected Areas Act now support these efforts.
New Systems and Helplines
The Wildlife Helpline 1107 is now fully operational. Citizens can access online services for various permits. These include shooting licences and import-export permits. Hunting permits and breeding farm registrations are also available online.
For the first time, Punjab has implemented an AI-based animal census system. GPS and collar tracker systems now monitor rescued animals. This technology ensures better care and tracking of wildlife.
Modern Facilities at Lahore Safari Zoo
Lahore Safari Zoo is getting major upgrades. New attractions include a 3D screen and animal sculptures. A 7D wildlife cinema will also open soon. Punjab’s first wildlife hospital is 80% complete. Specialist veterinary doctors will treat each species there. Plans also include a 360-degree virtual zoo. This will let citizens observe wildlife from home.
Ongoing Development Projects
Several wildlife sites are under development and renovation. These include Changa Manga and Uchhali Wetlands. Chashma Barrage and Bansra Gali Wildlife Park are also getting upgrades. Murree Biodiversity Park is part of this initiative.
Strengthened Enforcement
Residential standards for captive animals and birds are now set. The province deployed 544 wildlife rangers. They carry modern weapons and IT tools. Drones, body cameras, and night-vision equipment support their work. A special bike squad protects wildlife in desert areas. A dedicated wildlife force ensures effective protection across Punjab. Authorities strictly enforce the Animal Rights and Protection Act. This targets illegal hunting, unlawful captivity, and cruelty.
Alignment with Islamic Teachings
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif stressed that animal rights align with Islamic teachings. Protecting rare species also promotes tourism. It creates valuable employment opportunities. “Wildlife is our future asset; protecting it is our responsibility,” she said. She urged the public to support government conservation initiatives.
