Mallorca Unveils New 104km Hiking Trail Through Scenic Eastern Coast
A new long-distance hiking route has opened on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The trail stretches about 104 kilometres along the lesser-visited eastern coastline. It offers walkers a chance to explore natural landscapes, historic towns, and archaeological heritage.
Trail Details and Stages
The route is officially called the Gran Recorrido del Llevant, or East Mallorca GR-226. It runs through the Llevant region on the island’s eastern side. The trail opened in January and is divided into four roughly equal stages. Each stage covers just over 20 kilometres. Therefore, hikers can complete the journey over several days.
The four stages are:
- Cales de Mallorca to Manacor: 24.99km
- Manacor to Son Carrió: 22.99km
- Son Carrió to Artà: 23.19km
- Artà to Cala Mesquida: 22.63km
The largest daily climb reaches around 248 metres. This makes the route manageable for hikers of different experience levels. Additional access points include Son Macià and Costa dels Pins. Walkers can join or leave the trail at various locations. They can adapt their journey based on desired distance.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
The trail showcases several significant cultural sites. Near Artà, hikers find the prehistoric settlement of Ses Païsses. It dates back approximately 3,000 years. The 13th-century Bellpuig Monastery is also along the route. Walkers pass the 14th-century Capdepera Castle and the Cala Rajada Lighthouse. Other landmarks include the Church of Sant Joan Baptista. The Son Carrió Railway Museum offers another point of interest.
Beyond historical landmarks, the trail connects several towns and villages. Visitors can experience local traditions and culture in eastern Mallorca.
Scenic Diversity
The route runs from Cales de Mallorca to Cala Mesquida. It passes through a variety of stunning landscapes. These include coastal cliffs and sandy coves. Hikers also traverse forests and farmland. The trail travels through both inland and coastal sections. Therefore, walkers enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea alongside rural scenery.
