Pakistan DISCO Privatisation: Turkiye Invited to Join Power Sector Sell-Off

Pakistan is expanding international cooperation in the energy sector. The government has now invited Turkiye to join the Pakistan DISCO privatisation process. The move aims to improve efficiency and attract global investors. As a result, officials expect stronger management in electricity distribution companies.

Pakistan Shares Reform Plan

Federal Energy Minister Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari held a virtual meeting with Turkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar. During the discussion, both sides explored ways to deepen energy cooperation. Leghari explained Pakistan’s ongoing power sector reforms. He said these reforms focus on operational efficiency and better governance. In addition, the government wants to improve service delivery for electricity consumers. Therefore, the reform plan includes restructuring and selling distribution companies.

Why Pakistan Is Selling DISCOs

The government plans to privatise electricity distribution companies as part of long-term reforms. Officials believe private investment can strengthen the sector. For example, private operators often improve management and reduce system losses. As a result, the power system becomes more sustainable. Leghari stressed that the privatisation process will remain transparent and competitive. He also said authorities designed the process to attract credible international investors.

Opportunity for Turkish Investors

Pakistan believes Turkish companies could play an important role in the process. Many firms from Turkiye have strong experience in energy infrastructure. Because of this expertise, they could help improve operations and technology in distribution companies. In addition, cooperation may deepen economic ties between the two countries. Leghari also thanked Turkiye for its continued engagement with Pakistan’s energy institutions. Both governments have maintained regular communication through experts and technical teams.

Turkiye Shows Interest

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar welcomed the discussion. He noted that investors from Turkiye are closely watching developments in Pakistan’s power sector. According to him, several companies have already shown interest in potential opportunities. Therefore, Turkish firms may explore participation when the process moves forward. He also expressed confidence that cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow. Stronger partnerships could support energy development in the region.
