Ligue 1 Shock Loss: Monaco Beat PSG 3-1 to Ignite French Title Race

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a Ligue 1 shock loss on Friday night. Monaco defeated the champions 3-1 at the Parc des Princes. The result marked PSG’s first home defeat this season. However, the team still leads the standings by four points. Maghnes Akliouche opened the scoring in the 27th minute. He capitalized on a poor clearance inside PSG’s penalty area.
Folarin Balogun stepped aside during the play. As a result, Akliouche fired a precise left-footed shot into the net. Monaco controlled much of the first half. Meanwhile, PSG struggled to create clear chances in attack. After halftime, Monaco quickly extended their lead. Substitute Aleksandr Golovin scored with his first touch in the 55th minute. Mamadou Coulibaly delivered a smart pass across the box. Golovin then calmly finished to make it 2-0.
PSG pushed forward in response. Therefore, the match opened up with more attacking moves. Bradley Barcola offered hope in the 71st minute. He cut inside from the left and finished with a powerful strike.

Monaco Seal the Win

PSG’s comeback hopes did not last long. Just two minutes later, Monaco restored their two-goal lead. Balogun fired a shot that deflected off Nuno Mendes. The ball then rolled into the net for Monaco’s third goal.
Late in the match, Monaco nearly scored again. For example, Simon Adingra struck the crossbar in the final minutes. Despite the defeat, PSG remain top of Ligue 1. However, second-placed Lens could close the gap this weekend.
Lens will host bottom-placed Metz on Sunday. Therefore, the title race could grow even tighter. PSG now shift focus to Europe. The club faces Chelsea on Wednesday in the Champions League.
Coach Luis Enrique admitted the performance fell short. He said the team must improve quickly before the big European clash. One positive moment arrived late in the game. Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele returned from injury and played the second half.
