UK Wildlife Banknotes: Animals to Replace Historic Figures on Future Currency

The Bank of England plans a fresh look for future currency. The next series will highlight UK wildlife banknotes instead of famous historical figures. As a result, animals will soon appear on British currency. However, the portrait of King Charles III will still remain on every note.

A New Direction for Banknote Design

For decades, the Bank of England featured famous personalities on its notes. For example, writers and leaders like William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, and Jane Austen appeared on currency. However, the bank now wants to highlight nature. Officials believe wildlife images improve security features and visual appeal. Victoria Cleland, the bank’s chief cashier, shared the idea publicly. She explained that nature provides strong design options. In addition, it celebrates the country’s diverse ecosystems. Therefore, wildlife will replace historic figures on future banknotes.

Public Consultation Shapes the Decision

The bank asked the public for feedback in July 2025. More than 44,000 people responded to the consultation. Many participants supported nature as the main theme. In fact, around 60 percent preferred wildlife imagery. Other themes also gained support. For example, architecture and landmarks received about 56 percent approval. Meanwhile, notable historical figures gained 38 percent support.
Additional categories included arts, culture, sport, innovation, and national milestones.

Native Wildlife Will Take the Spotlight

Future UK wildlife banknotes will feature animals native to the United Kingdom. However, household pets will not appear on the designs. Instead, experts will suggest species that represent the country’s natural heritage. For example, birds, mammals, and marine life could appear on the notes.
Soon, the Bank of England plans another consultation. This time, the public will help select specific animals. Experts in British wildlife will prepare the shortlist. As a result, citizens will play a role in shaping the new currency.

Banknotes Across the United Kingdom

The Bank of England produces banknotes used in England and Wales. However, it is not the only issuer in the country. Seven commercial banks also print their own notes in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Despite these differences, the new wildlife theme may influence future designs across the UK.
In the coming years, British currency could showcase nature instead of famous people. As a result, everyday money may soon celebrate the country’s wildlife.
