Researchers focused on Wegovy, a high-dose semaglutide medication, and its association with ischemic optic neuropathy (ION). This condition, often called an “eye stroke,” reduces blood flow to the optic nerve and can cause sudden vision loss or permanent blindness.
Differences Between Semaglutide Medications:
Semaglutide appears in several medications from Novo Nordisk, including Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. Although they share the same active ingredient, the drugs are used differently. Wegovy is mainly for weight loss and is given in higher doses, approved by the National Health Service (NHS). Ozempic helps manage type 2 diabetes, while Rybelsus is a tablet for the same condition, usually at lower doses. The study suggests higher-dose Wegovy may increase the likelihood of eye-related complications.
