Wegovy Weight-Loss Injection Linked to Vision Risk

Wegovy Weight-Loss Injection Linked to Vision Risk

A recent medical analysis highlights potential vision risks linked to popular weight-loss injections. Researchers focused on Wegovy, a high-dose semaglutide medication, and its association with ischemic optic neuropathy (ION). This condition, often called an “eye stroke,” reduces blood flow to the optic nerve and can cause sudden vision loss or permanent blindness.

Differences Between Semaglutide Medications:

Semaglutide appears in several medications from Novo Nordisk, including Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. Although they share the same active ingredient, the drugs are used differently. Wegovy is mainly for weight loss and is given in higher doses, approved by the National Health Service (NHS). Ozempic helps manage type 2 diabetes, while Rybelsus is a tablet for the same condition, usually at lower doses. The study suggests higher-dose Wegovy may increase the likelihood of eye-related complications.

FDA Safety Reports Reveal Insights

Scientists reviewed over 30 million U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) adverse event reports from December 2017 to December 2024. Approximately 31,774 cases involved semaglutide medications. Analysis showed a potential link between semaglutide use and ischemic optic neuropathy. In addition, men were nearly three times more likely than women to report this eye condition. Researchers emphasize that patients using these drugs should remain alert to sudden changes in vision.

Recommendations for Users

Doctors advise regular eye check-ups for anyone taking semaglutide medications, especially high-dose Wegovy. Reporting symptoms such as blurred vision or flashes of light can prevent severe complications. In addition, maintaining a balanced diet and monitoring overall health supports both weight management and eye safety. Consulting a healthcare provider before continuing or starting any semaglutide treatment is essential for minimizing risks.
