Cape Town and Lagos Named World’s Best Cities to Visit in 2026

Two African cities have earned spots on the world’s best list. Cape Town and Lagos are named among the top 50 cities to visit in 2026. Time Out released its 10th annual global ranking. The list highlights destinations with the most exciting urban experiences today. Over 24,000 residents across 150 cities participated in the survey. Experts considered factors like food, nightlife, culture, affordability, and happiness.
Time Out’s travel editor noted a common theme among top cities. A strong sense of community and belonging unites them. Locals in these cities report feeling connected. This co-existence of cultures is something to celebrate.

Cape Town: Africa’s Highest-Ranked City

Cape Town secured the sixth position globally. It remains Africa’s highest-ranked city for another year. Its natural landscape and lifestyle continue to drive its appeal. A remarkable 86% of residents call it the most beautiful city in the world. This was the highest score recorded anywhere. The same percentage praised its green spaces and natural surroundings.
Eighty-five percent of locals rated their wellbeing as “good” or “amazing.” Time Out noted that the city wows you from the moment you land. Pristine beaches and the dramatic Table Mountain backdrop impress visitors. Tourism momentum is also building fast. Cape Town recently hosted an international MMA fight series. The Montreux Jazz Festival will debut nearby soon. A new Marriott Edition hotel is opening at the V&A Waterfront. New restaurants and culinary collaborations are also flourishing.

Lagos: Energy and Creativity on Display

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, placed 47th globally. Time Out describes it as a place where energy and creativity meet. “Nothing in Lagos is done quietly,” the publication wrote. Its nightlife, art scene, and food culture attract global attention. Life in this entertainment capital feels chaotic, overwhelming, but completely electric.
Victoria Island remains the focal point for entertainment. New restaurants like Nómaada and Rora join established favorites. The beach club scene is expanding with new openings like Kyma Lagos. Cultural institutions such as the Nike Art Gallery thrive. Major events like Lagos Fashion Week and Detty December celebrations draw crowds. The survey also highlighted Lagos’s social energy. Seventy-five percent of locals said it is easy to make friends there. This reflects the city’s reputation for openness and community.

Africa’s Growing Global Visibility

Only two African cities made the global top 50 this year. However, the ranking reflects their growing international visibility. Both cities boast expanding tourism investment. They have vibrant cultural industries and dynamic communities. Cape Town and Lagos are positioning themselves as global destinations. They offer unique experiences for travel, creativity, and cultural exchange.
