Pakistan Fuel Price Freeze: Government to Pay Rs23 Billion to Oil Companies

Pakistan Fuel Price Freeze: Government to Pay Rs23 Billion to Oil Companies

The Pakistan fuel price freeze has sparked debate after reports of a large government payment. Authorities plan to compensate oil companies to keep petrol and diesel prices unchanged. The move aims to protect consumers from sudden fuel price hikes. However, the decision may cost the government billions of rupees.

Government Steps In to Control Fuel Prices

According to a report by the BBC, the federal government plans to pay about Rs23 billion to oil companies. This payment will help maintain current petrol and diesel prices.
Global oil markets remain unstable due to tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. As a result, international oil prices continue to fluctuate. Despite these pressures, the government chose not to increase local fuel prices.

Decision Approved by Prime Minister

Officials from the Ministry of Energy said the prime minister approved the plan. Therefore, petrol and high speed diesel prices will stay unchanged. Authorities believe stable fuel prices will help control inflation. In addition, the decision may provide relief to households and businesses..However, the government must cover the difference between global and local fuel prices.

Rs23 Billion Compensation Plan

The petroleum division explained how the payment will work. Oil marketing companies will submit price differential claims for verification. The estimated compensation for March 14 to March 20, 2026, is around Rs23 billion. The funds will be paid through the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, commonly known as OGRA. The regulator will verify claims and process payments.

New Fund to Support the Payment

The government has also created a special fund for this purpose. The cabinet approved the creation of the “Prime Minister Austerity Fund.” Furthermore, the Economic Coordination Committee approved transferring Rs27.1 billion to the fund. From this amount, Rs23 billion will go to OGRA. The regulator will then distribute payments after auditing company claims. Officials have asked OGRA to complete the process quickly. As a result, the government hopes to maintain fuel price stability in the short term.
