Lens Lorient Loss Hurts Title Push as Ligue 1 Race Tightens

The Lens Lorient loss delivered a major blow to the club’s Ligue 1 title ambitions. RC Lens fell 2-1 away from home on Saturday. The result denied Lens the chance to move to the top of the table. Paris Saint-Germain stayed ahead despite not playing this weekend. PSG rested players before their Champions League clash with Chelsea. Therefore, Lens had a clear opportunity to apply pressure. However, the visitors struggled to create clear chances. Coach Pierre Sage admitted his team lacked attacking creativity.
“We had a lot of possession but didn’t create enough,” Sage explained. As a result, Lens missed a key moment in the title race. Lorient opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Bamba Dieng finished calmly to give the home side an early lead. Lens responded soon after halftime. Odsonne Edouard carried the ball forward and fired a low shot into the corner. The equalizer brought hope for the visitors. Nevertheless, Lorient regained control later in the match.
In the 65th minute, Aiyegun Tosin scored from close range. He reacted quickly after Arsene Kouassi’s cross dropped near the goal line. Lens pushed forward in the final minutes. They created pressure with several set pieces but could not find another goal.

Monaco and Nice Secure Important Wins

Elsewhere, AS Monaco continued their strong form. They secured a 2-0 victory against Brest. Folarin Balogun scored again during the match. The striker now has 14 goals this season in all competitions. Monaco’s win marked their fifth straight league victory. Consequently, they climbed to fifth place in the standings. Meanwhile, Nice also celebrated a positive result. They defeated Angers 2-0 away from home.
Defender Melvin Bard opened the scoring early. Later, Elye Wahi added another goal to seal the win. Wahi joined the club on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt this winter. His goal helped Nice end a six-game winless league run. As a result, the team moved eight points clear of the relegation play-off spot. The Ligue 1 table remains tightly contested.
