Pakistan Health Crisis Worsens in 2026

Pakistan Health Crisis Worsens in 2026

Pakistan’s health sector is in complete disarray. According to the Pakistan Medical Association’s Health of the Nation 2026 report, preventable deaths are now normalized. Shockingly, 675 newborns and 27 mothers die every day from avoidable causes. These losses reflect governance failures, not fate. Immediate action is critical to stop this ongoing tragedy.

Water and Infectious Diseases

Contaminated water remains a silent killer. Nearly 40% of annual deaths are linked to unsafe water, causing 30% of reported diseases nationwide. Diarrhoea kills countless infants and young children, while one in five Pakistanis suffers from water-related illness. The rise of drug-resistant typhoid in Karachi highlights the dangers. Unsafe water, uncontrolled antibiotic use, and weak health oversight are combining to make infections harder to treat.

Chronic Illness and Epidemics

Pakistan also faces a high burden of chronic illnesses. The country has the highest rates of breast cancer in Asia, widespread hepatitis C, and serious heart disease. HIV infections have surged by 200% in 15 years, making it the fastest-growing epidemic in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. Around 350,000 people live with HIV, many unaware of their status. These outbreaks reveal the fragility of medical regulations and preventive care.

Drugs, Environment, and Policy

Rising medicine prices and shortages of 80 essential drugs, including insulin, worsen the crisis. Families often must choose between food and treatment. Toxic air adds another layer of risk, making environmental degradation a public health emergency. The PMA urges a national health emergency, increased spending to 3% of GDP, price controls, and clean drinking water access. Without these steps, the crisis will deepen, and more lives will be lost.
