A research team from the University of Sydney, along with experts from Chile and Brazil, studied over 53,000 adults in the UK. They tracked sleep, activity, and diet for eight years. As a result, they recorded 2,034 cases of major heart diseases.
Participants used wearable devices like smartwatches to track daily habits. In addition, they shared details about their diet. The findings appeared in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
The study showed that small increases made a big impact. For example, adding 11 minutes of sleep improved outcomes. Similarly, 4.5 minutes of brisk walking and 50 grams of vegetables reduced risk.

Researchers explained that these are average improvements, not strict targets. However, they highlight how small steps add up over time. As a result, consistent effort matters more than perfection.
Combining healthy habits brings stronger benefits. Getting 8–9 hours of sleep, regular activity, and balanced meals can cut risk by up to 57%. In addition, activities like walking, cycling, and dancing support heart health.
Lead researcher Nicholas Koemel said small changes are easier to follow. Therefore, people can maintain them long term. Experts agree that realistic goals help more people stay consistent.

Health experts praised the study for its practical advice. Emily McGrath from the British Heart Foundation noted that many feel overwhelmed by strict health rules. However, this research offers a simpler path.
