Pakistan Reduced Speed Limits: New Rules to Save Fuel Nationwide

Pakistan Reduced Speed Limits: New Rules to Save Fuel Nationwide

Pakistan has introduced new Pakistan speed limits to save fuel and improve road safety. The government enforced these rules on March 26, 2026. Authorities want drivers to follow lower speeds across the country. As a result, officials expect reduced fuel use and better energy efficiency. The decision came under the direction of Shehbaz Sharif. In addition, authorities launched awareness campaigns to guide drivers. They aim to ensure everyone understands the new rules clearly.

New Speed Limits on Motorways

Motorway users must now follow updated limits. Cars and light vehicles can travel up to 100 km/h instead of 120 km/h. Meanwhile, buses and heavy vehicles must stay within 90 km/h, down from 110 km/h. These changes directly target fuel savings. Experts explain that lower speeds improve engine efficiency.
For example, vehicles use less fuel when they face reduced air resistance. Therefore, drivers can save fuel on long journeys. In addition, slower speeds help reduce sudden braking and acceleration. This creates smoother traffic flow. Authorities also expect fewer accidents on busy motorways. Drivers gain more time to react in difficult situations. As a result, road safety improves for everyone. Officials believe these steps will create long-term benefits for both drivers and the economy.

Revised Limits on National Highways

The government also reduced speeds on national highways. Cars and light vehicles must now follow a limit of 80 km/h instead of 100 km/h. Similarly, heavy and passenger vehicles must stay within 65 km/h, down from 80 km/h. Officials say these steps support national energy goals.
Moreover, global fuel price pressures pushed policymakers to act quickly. According to experts, even small speed changes make a difference. For instance, a 10 km/h reduction can cut fuel use by up to 6 percent. Therefore, this policy can help lower overall fuel demand. In addition, it can reduce environmental impact over time. Authorities expect drivers to cooperate with these changes.
