Pakistan Fuel Rationing Plan: Govt Considers Quotas Amid Oil Crisis

Pakistan Fuel Rationing Plan: Govt Considers Quotas Amid Oil Crisis

Pakistan is considering Pakistan fuel rationing measures to manage a possible oil shortage. Officials say the government may introduce quotas and travel limits if the crisis worsens. However, no final decision has been made yet.
The situation follows tensions linked to the Iran conflict. Supply disruptions have already pushed fuel prices higher across the country. As a result, authorities have started preparing contingency plans.

Proposed Fuel Rationing Measures

Officials are reviewing several options to control fuel use. For example, they may allow vehicles with odd and even number plates to operate on alternate days. This system could reduce traffic and fuel demand quickly. In addition, authorities may introduce fuel quotas for motorcycles and rickshaws. They plan to manage this through a mobile application. However, experts note that rural areas may face challenges due to limited smartphone access.
The government has already taken steps to save fuel. For instance, it reduced working days and moved some classes online. Therefore, these new proposals build on existing conservation efforts.

Oil Crisis and Government Response

The crisis began after tensions disrupted global oil supply routes. Iran’s move to restrict shipping in key waterways has affected markets worldwide. Consequently, Pakistan increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per liter this month.
Despite these challenges, officials say fuel reserves remain stable for now. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority has also trained industry players on a digital tracking system. This system aims to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth supply.
Meanwhile, the government continues to explore additional solutions. Authorities may also offer subsidized fuel to motorcycle and rickshaw drivers. However, broader rationing for all vehicles is not under serious review.
Officials stress that these steps will only apply if the crisis deepens. For now, the government is closely monitoring the situation and preparing for any sudden changes.
