Khairpur Mpox Alert: Seven Infants Die, Health Teams Respond

Khairpur and surrounding districts are facing a worrying rise in infections among children. Many infants have shown unusual skin lesions, prompting authorities to act quickly. Health officials confirmed that seven children have died so far. Most victims are newborns, and some mothers have exhibited similar symptoms.

Investigation and Hospital Response

Sindh Health Care Commission CEO Dr. Ahson Qavi Siddiqi told Dawn that a team visited hospitals on the health department’s request. They ensured infection control protocols were implemented. He added that a committee led by the deputy commissioner, along with all stakeholders, has been formed. A surveillance team is monitoring the situation closely. All hospitals involved are registered with the commission.
Authorities have noted poor infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in hospitals as a key factor in the rapid spread. Sukkur Children’s Hospital and private facilities in Khairpur reported several suspected cases. In response, isolation centres have been set up in different hospitals.

Emergency Measures and Contact Tracing

Sukkur Commissioner Abid Saleem Qureshi wrote to the Sindh health secretary, calling the situation emergency-like in Khairpur and Sukkur. He instructed the Khairpur district health officer to conduct comprehensive contact tracing. Identified contacts are being sampled, isolated, and monitored. Health teams are enforcing strict use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in all government hospitals. A Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been created to oversee the outbreak.
Officials emphasize treating the situation as a public health emergency. They urge all departments to coordinate efforts and act swiftly. Early intervention and careful monitoring are crucial to protecting children and preventing further spread. Families are advised to follow safety instructions, report symptoms immediately, and cooperate with healthcare teams.

Community Awareness and Next Steps

Health authorities continue to educate communities about hygiene and symptom awareness. Awareness campaigns are underway in affected districts to guide parents. Hospitals remain on high alert, and officials are committed to stopping the outbreak. With coordinated measures, they hope to contain the disease and protect vulnerable children.
